British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in hills just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels down to the depot... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he added. "They were among a great many British troops on duty over the festive period. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an attack killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
